Książka poświęcona jest fortyfikacjom Gdańska od schyłku średniowiecza do czasów współczesnych. The book is concerned with the fortifications of Gdańsk (Danzig) from the close of the Middle Ages to the present day. The collected team of authors, each with a depth of knowledge for their subjects, describe the choosen area, i.e. a history and architectural development of the defences,  their political, historical and social setting, the present state of works and their possible future. The articles include plans, maps, drawings and photographs.
