Site description
Novgorod (also known as Novgorod The Great) is an administrative center of the Novgorod region with about 238 000 inhabitants on a territory of 80 km. The town is situated on the banks of the river Volhov. A water way to the Baltic sea runs on this river through Ladozskoe lake and Neva river. Velikij Novgorod is situated between Moscow and St Petersburg and is connected with them by auto and rail ways.
Novgorod is one of the cradles of Russia. Traditions of Russian democracy are connected with Novgorod Veche (Old Russian parliament), which existed in 9-16 centuries. Velikij Novgorod is the most ancient town in Russia. In 1999 it was 1140 years old. The complex of middle-age monuments of architecture and nature landscapes of Velikij Novgorod are written down into the list of the world heritage UNESCO. Novgorod had wide cultural and trade contacts with many European towns.
Model description
1. How to maintain and manage the old cultural heritage in the city.
Three important aspects to be illuminated are:
- How to maintain buildings, decorations, etc using the old technology,
alfresco paintings, etc.
- How to use old buildings for new functions e.g. a castle might continue to be a castle but also a concert hall or museum or conference place etc.
- How to do traffic planning with old buildings and a city plan that is not at all adapted to the modern situation.
2. The use of advanced GIS for urban planning. The emphasis on the use of very detailed GIS maps and how to make long range planning using GIS.
3. Democracy and urban development in Eastern Europe, especially.
- The development of associations (condominium) in residential areas,
where the inhabitants have a good possibility to take part in how the area is
managed, not only their own flat but also the house and the neighbourhood.
- The folk highschool where basic ideas of social change and democracy
are studied.
