The major spheres of activity of the Department are:
- bearing capacity of the layered subsoil
- active and passive earth pressure
- bifurcation and dislocation problems in soil medium
- stability of shallow and block foundations, retaining structures and their optimization
- bearing capacity and settlement of pile foundations
- stability and protection of sea cliffs
- improvement of subsoil
- foundation of polluted soil and water by biological techniques
- waste deposits
- research on the properties of geosynthetics and their interaction with the subsoil
- homogenization in porous media
- constitutive law of soils
