Homepage
A homepage for the SUPERBS project is planned to be in the internet in January 2000. We would like you to provide us with maps and pictures suitable for each model project (a special request will be sent to you regarding this).
Payment for first project period April 23 - Sept 1st
There will be a delay of payment from Interreg II C for the first phase due to some reporting problems from the partners. The lead partner Turku and the Coordination secretariat are working on solving these "small" problems. Partners are to be contacted as needed.
No additional funds.
In October 1999 SUPERBS applied for additional funding from Interreg II C for the EU-partners, mainly for the TV production. Unfortunately Interreg II C did not approve our application. Each partner or TV producer will have to find their own additional resources as needed.
Also it is important that you who did not yet send your comments and feedback on various issues which have been raised during the last three months (books, seminars, case study reports and TV production) send it as soon as possible.
Change of German project partner
The city of Hamburg is the new German project partner. The City of Hamburg is officially the new partner since December 1999. There is no change in the project plan otherwise. The administration of the German work is
coordinated by
Prof. Walter Leal Filho

The project manager is still Mr Per-Arne Lindström,
Case Study reports - date for delivery approaching
The date for delivering the case study reports is the 15th of December 1999. We hope several are now in the mail. For those who will not deliver their case studies before Christmas the co-ordination secretariat would like to see an outline and short statement of how work is proceeding.
Please plan the outline of the report according to the guidelines sent to you in September. This is in short: For each of the three themes write 5 pages of introduction and 10 pages of technical documentation. This will make the entire report about 50 pages. The report should be delivered in two languages, the national language and English.
Books
The three books to be produced are far into the planning and together with project partners we are recruiting authors actively. The current proposed content of the three books has been sent to all SUPERBS partners for feedback. Those who have not yet sent their feedback please do so at your earliest convenience.
TV production
Nearly all partners have already succeeded in establishing contacts with a TV producer. The coordination secretariat is now writing co-production contracts with these. For Phare and Tacis countries the Baltic University and the TV producers will be contract partners, while for the EU countries there will be three partners signing the contracts as the EU partners are included, (as funders).
Novgorod project task agreed on
The Novgorod model project was agreed on when a delegation from Novgorod, including the Mayer Mr. Alexander V. Korsunov, Prof. and architect Igor Alexanderov and Mr. Denis Repkin, visited the SUPERBS co-ordination secretariat in Uppsala. The Novgorod visitors, discussed with Lars Rydén and Naseem Jeryis of the Baltic University Programme and Mr Axel Gisslén of Örebro City, long term cooperation partner of Novgorod, about possible Novgorod tasks.
The Novogord project will consist of three themes 1) Restoration and maintenance of the old cultural heritage in Novgorod, one of the oldest and most renowned in Northern Europe and indeed the world; 2) The application of GIS as a technical support in planning at the municipality: and 3) Democracy and participation, where housing cooperatives and the role of a newly developed folk highschool, are interesting activities.
Tartu
A first draft of the case study report has been sent from Prof. Jussi Jauhiainen. The report will be completed in January.
Livani
A project team has been established in Livani consisting of the Head of planning in the Municipality, researchers at the University of Latvia and several students. Prof. Arnolds Ubelis has delivered a detailed description of how the work with the report is been organised. Several university students contribute.
In November a video conference was organized (Uppsala-Riga) between the Livani team and a group from the town of Norrtälje, just north of Stockholm, in Sweden, to establish cooperation. Norrtälje on the Baltic Sea coast, 50.000 inhabitants of which 25.000 live in the town itself, is the municipality in Sweden with the highest number of small companies per capita. Agreements on future cooperation were made. Livani is much concerned with economic development of the town.
Kaunas
Prof. Linas Kliucininkas has provided a content of the case study report in November, and the complete report is expected on time.
Jelgava
Project coordinator Lars Rydén visited Jelgava in October. The details of the Jelgava tasks were agreed on and the project team with Dr. Mara Urtane and Iveta Lacauniece were organized further. Much material for the progress report is already available.
Gdynia/Kosakowo
Lars Rydén visited the Gdynia Kosakowo team, headed by Assoc. Prof. Dorota Wlodarczyk, already in July. The project team is established with personnel from the municipalities of Kosakowo and Gdynia, the inhabitants of the neighbourhood in Suchi Dwor and the group at Gdansk University of Technology. Several students contribute as part of their research.
