General news

This is the Second newsletter for the SUPERBS project which we intend to publish regularly. In the newsletter you will receive information about the latest development in the SUPERBS project.
You are very welcome to send news from your activities to the newsletter! This will make it more interesting and dynamic and reflect better the development in the project.

Thanks for those partners whom have sent their reflection and it is good to know that such Newsletter is needed.

Planning for the first SUPERBS travelling seminar on April 13-18. We would like to ask you to book the date in your calendar.
A separate e-mail message will be sent soon to all partners in this regards. In the separate message we shall ask you to provide us with information regarding your attendance. Such information will help us to complete all the arrangements for the planned seminar.

Sustainable Cities and Towns Campaign conference, Hannover 2000

During Febr 8-11 Hannover invited to the third sustainable cities and towns campaign conference. Close to 1500 participants from all over Europe took part in workshops, roundtables, study visits listened to plenary lectures etc. From the Superbs project the Finnish, Polish, and German partners were present in addition to the co-ordinating unit at the Baltic University Programme. Highlighted at the conference were Agenda 21 in the cities, indicators for sustainability, energy issues, east-west co-operation, and the building of new residential areas. Future contacts with the Campaign is important for the Superbs project. We will strive to collect information and make it available for all project partners


Project output news

Case Study reports
Many of the partners are engaged with making the final completions in the case study reports. Those partners who are arranging the of seminar are to finalize their reports as soon as possible.

Books
The co-ordination Secretariat has received feedback from most of the partners as concerns the lay out of the books, and authorship has been assigned for a long list of book chapters. A suggestion from Assoc. Prof. Per G Berg to include a section in book III about the role of the civil society in urban planning and sustainable development has been accepted. An additional section in book III will include the following chapters:

14. Local Management in Communities
15. Social Acceptance and Readiness to Act - Keys to sustainable communities
16. Balancing Local and central management

TV production. Workshop for TV producers
After an intensive efforts all the arrangement for TV production are completed. TV contracts have been undersigned for nearly all partners. The TV companies have appointed TV producers who are directly responsible for the productions. A workshop for TV producers will be organised in Tallinn between the 31/3 and 2/4 2000. Responsible for the Workshop is Mr Uffe Wikström of Åbo Akademi, University Turku,. in co-operation with Mr Magnus Lehman at the Baltic University Co-ordination Secretariat. Host is Assoc Prof. Tatyana Polaeva, Tallinn Technical University, and Ms Tiina Kangro, Acting Director of Estonian Television.


Partner news

Tartu
Project coordinator Lars Rydén and Naseem Jeryis have visited Estonia in January 28-30, for discussing the progress in the model project in Tartu and discussion the TV production with the Estonian TV.
Mr Indrek Ranniku, Prof. Jussi Jauhiainen and TT have arranged a very successful visit tour to the three neighbourhoods in Tartu. The three areas to be documented in the report are:
1- Jaamamoisa and Raadi military airfield, the reuse of military area for civil purposes, e.g. residence, car rally.
2- Suppilinn is an old residential area which is undergoing rehabilitation.
3- Industrial area within the city boundary which is to be reused for offices and commercial activities.

A meeting was held with Ms Tiina Kangro, the director of the Estonian television in Tallinn, during which the undersigning of the TV contract have been made as well as an appointment of a TV producer. Ms Tiina Rebane, a journalist from the Estonian TV, Tartu department have joined us during the visit tour in Tartu. Ms Tiina Rebane had the opportunity to meet with the project team from Tartu and has been informed about the ideas and issues to be addressed in the TV programme.

Gdynia/Kosakowo
The residents in the model area Suchy Dwor in Kosakowo have formed an neighbourhood group. The group has organised sports events for the children, social events, such as barbeque, in the evenings and start to plan for greening their area.
