THE THIRD SUPERBS TRAVELLING SEMINAR to LATVIA, ESTONIA and RUSSIA took place on the 6th - 12th of April, 2001. The focus of this third seminar was public participation in city development. The participants started in Riga, Latvia, where a seminar on identity and architecture took place as well as a seminar on the Latvian system of regional planning. Next a visit to Jelgava highlighted the problems of urban planning of a city in which not much was left of the old after the Second World War and Soviet rule. Later on the small town of Livani was visited and the focus was on the inhabitants as a human resource in economic development.
In Estonia Tartu was the model city to be visited. Several areas in the city and in particular the wooden house district Supilinn was much discussed and the role of the present inhabitants in the city when rebuilding and renovation was badly needed. Similarly the former very large Soviet military airfield in Tartu is now being rebuild.
In Russia Novgorod (the wise) was visited with great interest since few of the participants had been there before. The very interesting work in the city to use modern GIS technology to develop an ancient environment was discussed intensely. The efforts to improve democracy e.g. in residential houses and in a Folk High School was also interesting. The seminar was finally visiting St Petersburg before being dissolved.
The hospitable hosts in each country prepared for all of us unforgettable moments and great surprises. THANK YOU !
"Improving our cities - towards environmental excellence" was the subject of the students conference held in Borki on 18-22 April 2001. Balticburg was a city to be rebuilt to face the challenges of sustainable development. One hundred students from the region constructed their models. Three experts from the Superbs Project, were invited to advise and help students. The students were very involved and satisfied with the conference.
