1. SUPERBS' PROJECT - LONG TERM EFFECTS

EDUCATIONAL ASPECT

The pilot course Sustainable Community Development and Urban Planning was organized in 2000/2001. The students from Technical University of Hamburg, Latvian University of Agriculture, Jelgava, Kaunas University of Technology, Technical University of Gdansk, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala participated in it. During the course three international seminars over videoconference were arranged. Several of students took part in the Baltic Meeting Point seminar in Uppsala in May. The material is now developed for a larger participation of the universities in the course on Sustainable Community Development and Urban Planning starting in spring 2002. The conference for teachers, who will start the course at their universities is planned for January 2002 in Poland.

THE TV SERIES ON BALTIC REGION RE-URBANIZATION - CITY 2000

A TV series was made to first illustrate the situation in the participating cities, but also to be able to disseminate the project results to a larger group. It is expected that at least some of programs will be broadcast to national audiences.
The TV productions were carried out by a series of producers. Each TV program has been set to 28 minutes which, together with credits etc will suit a 30 minutes slot in program tables. The TV programs are special in that they introduce the inhabitants of the cities into the project, being less "dry and factual" than case studies and reports.
The TV programs have been collected in four groups. Below follows a short description of the TV series "City 2000 - A TV series on Sustainable Community Development and the new city".

Students' workshops in Hällefors in autumn 2001

Students, with architectural background, from Uppsala, Jelgava, Gdansk and Tartu are invited for study visits to Hällefors and surrounding areas. They will then propose their vision of "Sensorial Garden" - a project for a site chosen by Roland Gustavsson, Eco co-ordinator Hällefors Municipality. He plans to organize a seminar in Loka Brunn next autum where the best students' designs for Hällefors will be presented.

Gunnar's Persson New position and invitation for further cooperation

In August Gunnar Persson started to work as the vice city architect in the City of Örebro.
He is responsible for the implementation and development of the comprehensive plan which is now in the end of the process and the local parliament will probably decide about it in the end of this year.
Let me quote a fragment of his mail:
"I have seen our cooperation in the Superb project as very important, stimulating and nice and I would like to go in with this in some forms. I think (for example) the "middle seized" cities of Örebro, Turku, Tartuu, Jelgava, Kaunas and Gdansk/Gdynia, thanks to our network, can have some useful cooperation in the future. Örebro is a city with about 125 000 inhabitants and I think we can offer You a lot of interest for a planner, (residential areas, traffic, environmental matters, business) just as You have shown from Your cities.
Maybe we can start with an informal seminar somewhere, sometime. I would be very happy to meet You again."

Congratulation for Your new position and Good Luck from the SUPERBS' Community. We appreciate your PROPOSALS and we are all for it.

3. SEMINARS' ALBUM

After our last travelling seminar there were many interesting photos, memorising the event circulating in the internet. There is an idea to add a Superbs Seminars' photo gallery to our webpage. If you like this idea please send photos in JPEG format with the name of the place, where they were taken - to my mailbox.
