Założenia i cele przedmiotu:
The aim of the course is to presence different aspects and information about waste, such as waste management policy, type of wastes, collecting, segregation, methods of utilization.

Metody dydaktyczne:
Lectures are delivered in a mixed system, utilizing both on overhead or multimedia projector and the blackboard.

Laboratory: carrying out four selected experiments, visit in municipal landfills
Project: student will prepare technological project of selected methods of waste utilization and will also present the short presentations connected with municipal and industrial solid waste management.

Treści programowe:
Law regulation of waste management in Poland and EU. Definitions, classification. Waste management policy. Avoidance of production - non-waste technology. Municipal solid waste: characteristic of quantity and quality. Collecting systems of domestic waste. Deposition of waste in landfills. Principle of controlled landfill constructions and management. Physical, chemical and biological processes in landfills. Biogas recovery. Landfills leachate, characteristics and methods of management. Composting of organic waste. Principles of composting processes, compost classification. Composting in piles and closed facilities. Thermal treatment of waste. Pyrolisis and incineration. Industrial waste management. Characteristic of exemplary industrial waste and their treatment. Industrial waste containing asbestos - ways of its disposal. Problem of plastic waste. Disposal of sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants. Methane fermentation of sewage sludge. Combined treatment of solid waste from different sources. Co-incineration with solid fuels. Hazardous waste. Sources and effect on environment hazardous waste disposal examples of waste containing: heavy metals, fluorocarbons, radioactive substances, asbestos, petroleum derivatives, pesticides.

Warunki zaliczenia przedmiotu:
Lectures: students are eligible to take the exam only after passing in project and laboratory. They should achieve at least 50% score at written exam.
Project: presence is obligatory, presenting one presentation on a given topic, preparing technological project (in two-three person groups)
Laboratory: presence is obligatory, passing the introductory tests, carrying out the experiments and return the acceptable reports
